Eric WolfThanks for your help CJ, this is exactly what I was looking for, I ordered the 5-1/2".
Jim, I got some of the same MacTac checkers at Home Depot but you need a smooth surface for it to stick.
I would like to use the flooring you posted but found it a little pricey, so for the flooring I am going to use a VA tile.
Thanks for you help, Eric.
CJYou're welcome............glad it helped!

Here are some pics of the floors in two of our garages:

We bought the materials from a local tile store and did the work ourselves.
Easy job, just rough on the knees.

Scotty,

Yes, we made the inlays - the flag part we bought was a 12" square of checkered black & white tile (got it at Home Depot), the rest of the surrounding area - we created using pieces cut from either a 8" black or white tile depending on the space to be covered. It was a little time consuming but certainly worth it.

Thanks to all for the compliments on the floors. It wasn't hard to do, but one of those jobs you say that you'll never do again. We have said that three times now.

Remember, when laying tile - shiny side up.

cnote6I did this at my Dallas store. Make sure to put carpet under the tires not to stain the floor.

Richard JacksonEric, how has the VC tile worked out? Any Problems and what floor preparation is needed?

Thanks

RJ...Get on your hands and knees and run a window sticker scraper over every inch of floor first. make sure the floor is smooooooth.

Get a laser level and take ALL the time you need to lay out the first course of tiles. Mark the floor as the glue is translucent and dries clear. Center the first course between the garage door so it is symmetrical.

The glue used is fantastic....It is applied with a 1/32 groove trowel. Let it set for an hour before laying any tile. You then have a 24 hour working time. Temps MUST be above 65.

if you have a helper wiping the tiles and handing them to you, you can finish a 20x 20 garage in 2 hours. I avge. 9 tiles per minute. Cutting is a breeze...score and snap!

Just tuck each tile tight into the previous course and make sure your lines don't drift. But the tiles are so perfectly manufactured, it's kind of hard to drift.

Good luck! No fear...and if you screw up, just remind yourself it's just a garage...that took a lot of pressure off us....LOL>

Richard JacksonEric, thanks for the info, very useful. The floor scrapper idea is a good one. Like you say it is just the garage. My son and I will attempt it next week.

A little trick if you are laying down a chalk line for your grids, spray the chalk line with hair spray . The line will stay a long time.
